Wine Notes:

This wine hails from one of the oldest wine producing areas in Italy and is of the grape known locally as Morellino; that derives its name from the typical black horses of the Maremma, to define its rich, dark color. In addition, Morellino di Scansano is recognized and classified in Italy as a Superior wine, which was a matter of common knowledge throughout Europe more than a century ago.

The Morellino (or sangiovese) grapes from Scansano are smaller, more concentrated, and much darker in color than the traditional Sangiovese grapes grown elsewhere in Tuscany; due in part to the local climate and fertile soil of the surrounding area.

Winemaker Notes:

It should be noted that the fermentation process starts with a 15 day maceration process, keeping the grape skins in contact with the juice longer. This process creates the wonderful, warm, rich, full, soft body that is characteristic of this wine. At sight a deep ruby red color tending towards garnet. The nose is vinous, delicate and with clear characteristics, and tends to become even softer with age. The flavors first impact is equally sapid, slightly tannic, warm and soft, with a long, pleasantly smooth and persistent finish. It has a softer body and more subtle feel that it’s cousin – Chianti.

Wines from this appellation are usually suited to moderate aging, and may also be drunk young.

At its best when opened or decanted 30 to 45 minutes or longer prior to serving.

Pairing:

This is a smooth yet robust wine suitable to serve with strongly flavored dishes, roasted or grilled meats.
