Wine Notes:
The #1 grape, the most popular grape, and undisputed gem of Sicilian wine making.
The most important and #1 grape in Sicily, is the most well-known and most grown grape on the entire Island of Sicily, and by total volume grownthe most grown grape in the world. It is named after Avola in the far south of Sicily and its wines are compared to New World Shirazes, with sweet tannins and plum or peppery flavors. It also contributes to Marsala blends. "The Black Grape of Avola" appears to have been selected by growers near Avola (a small town in south east Sicily) several hundred years ago. Initially, it was confined to the southern tip of the island but more recently has spread throughout the island; however, its best samples are still produced in this part of Sicily due to excellent climate and soils. Nero dŽAvola grows throughout the region and the wines that are produced take on their own special characteristics depending on the part of the island in which they are grown. Today it is one of the most well-known wines from all of Italy, both in quality and for its value.
